Green Space Committee

Mission: to improve or redevelop green and public space within the city of Syracuse.

Description: The Green Space committee carries out its mission by choosing green spaces within Syracuse that need improving or updating.  We create landscape plans that include new plants and/or trees; partner with an organization that will commit to long term maintenance of the project; and then gather volunteers to execute the plan.

East Lawn of MOST: The Green Space committee secured a grant from the Central New York Community Foundation to landscape the East lawn of the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (“MOST”), a science museum located in downtown Syracuse.  The group worked in partnership with the City of Syracuse Parks Department and the MOST to re-landscape the gardens and walkways leading to the museum’s entrance. These walkways also serve as a gateway to Syracuse's downtown business district, Armory Square.

Housing Visions Home Landscaping: In 2006 and 2007 the Green Space committee secured donations from local nurseries and greenhouses to add attractive, easy to maintain landscapes to rental homes in Syracuse owned by Housing Visions Unlimited, Inc. We collaborate with residents at each home to design gardens of their choice.  Each garden was planted in partnership with volunteers as well as the residents from each house.

Lipe Art Park: As part of this year’s 40 Below Impact Summit, the Green Space committee partnered with 40 Below’s Public Arts Task Force to create a temporary art park in open previously unused space on W. Fayette Street in Syracuse.  The park consists of sculptures and a Victorian garden designed by members of the committee.  The garden materials were purchased with a grant from The Ford Foundation, and participants of the 40 Below Summit 2007 then planted the flowers.

The Wilson Building

Adapt CNY is working to redevelop this historic building into market-rate residential apartments and ground floor retail space.  The project is intended to be a catalytic project for the 300 Block of South Salina Street in downtown Syracuse.  Click here for more information.

Wilson Clean Out – For several weekends during the Fall of 2006 Adapt CNY and a crew of volunteers from 40 Below and businesses in Syracuse worked to clean out the Wilson Building.  The building was filled with office furniture, books, files and equipment from when the building was in operation before the City of Syracuse took possession of the property in 2003 ?

New Year’s Eve – Adapt CNY hosted a New Year’s Eve fundraiser at Hotel Syracuse to ring in 2007.  Its theme was The Roaring 20’s and guests came dressed in themed outfits.  Food and drink was provided by Pascale’s; Arthur Murray Dance Studio offered dance lessons; and New Day, a popular local band rang in the new year.  A silent auction with over 80 items was available to guest throughout the night. The party drew upwards of 250 people and raised approximately $15,000 for Adapt CNY, Inc. (???).
